Adverse effects of methylprednisolone pulse therapy in refractory Kawasaki disease.
The efficacy and safety, including arrhythmia and sudden death, 2 of intravenous methylprednisolone pulse (IVMP) therapy in patients with Kawasaki disease (KD) are uncertain. We conducted a control study in KD patients with persistent or recurrent fever (>37.5̊ C) 48 hours after a single infusion of initial intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) 2 g/kg. At enrolment (day 1), the subjects were randomi...

Although the main hematologic findings, such as spherocytosis, polychromasia, anisopoikilocytosis, and reticulocytosis, etc. and Coombs test results were not given, the patient most likely had hemolytic anemia, for which he was given pulse methylprednisolone (MP) three days after intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy, which might also cause encephalopathy. However, the hematologic changes w...
متن کاملBone metabolism during methylprednisolone pulse therapy in rheumatoid arthritis.
The deleterious effects of corticosteroids (CS) on bone are well known, but probably differ depending on duration and dosage of CS therapy. Presently huge amounts of CS are given over a short period of time in different rheumatic conditions. Not much is known about the effect of this kind of CS treatment on bone metabolism. Twenty patients with persistently active rheumatoid arthritis were trea...
متن کاملDoes Low-Dose Intravenous Methylprednisolone Pulse Therapy Produce Unacceptable Adverse Effects in Children?
Background: Intravenous methylprednisolone pulse therapy has been used since the late 1960s for acute transplant rejection or severe renal involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus and primary glomerulonephritis. However, reports of serious adverse effects such as life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias and sudden death raise questions about its safety. Objective: To investigate the incidence of...
متن کاملIntravenous pulse methylprednisolone in chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenia.
Two children with chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura unresponsive to either standard corticosteroid treatment or high dose intravenous gammaglobulin, or both, were treated with intravenous methylprednisolone (15 mg/kg/day) given in pulses over three consecutive days. Both children showed a positive response and are still in remission after three months.
